About the Item

Ornithology Print of Swans, Ducks, Pelicans and Seabirds by T Bromme c1865 This beautifully hand-colored 19th-century lithograph, printed circa 1865 by German geographer and scientific illustrator Traugott Bromme, presents an elegant array of water birds and seabirds. The print was published as part of Bromme’s *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, a comprehensive educational atlas combining geography, zoology, and ethnography. This ornithological plate highlights various species associated with lakes, rivers, and coastal environments. Dominating the bottom center is a graceful swan (16) surrounded by ducks including a mallard (18), merganser (20), and eider duck (19). A pink pelican (9) and two types of cormorants (8 and 6) stand nearby, shown in active postures. Seabirds such as the puffin (5), auk (3), and gulls (12 and 14) are depicted along rocky shorelines. Also featured are a grebe (1), loon or diver (2), heron or bittern (10), tern (11), and goose (17). Smaller waders and shorebirds, such as a sandpiper (15), round out the composition. Each bird is shown in its typical habitat with accurate proportions and subtle coloration. The use of soft blues, greys, and whites enhances the aquatic theme while maintaining clarity of species distinction. Bromme’s atlas was a vital part of 19th-century educational publishing, offering richly illustrated insights into the diversity of the natural world. Today, these lithographs are appreciated for their visual charm, scientific content, and decorative quality. Condition report: Original hand-colored lithograph by T Bromme, circa 1865. Light even age toning with mild foxing along lower edge. Strong color retention and no damage or repairs. Tips for framing: Use a soft ivory or pale blue mat to reflect the water tones. A medium walnut or dark grey wood frame creates a classic and natural presentation, ideal for studies, libraries, or coastal-inspired interior spaces.
