About the Item

Ornithology Print of Toucans, Woodpeckers, Thrushes and Kingfishers by T Bromme c1865 This original hand-colored lithograph, published circa 1865 by German geographer and scientific author Traugott Bromme, presents a colorful array of birds from various families and habitats. The print is taken from Bromme’s famous *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, a 19th-century educational atlas combining zoology, geography, and ethnography into beautifully illustrated volumes for both public instruction and home learning. At the center of the composition is a striking toucan (2), perched on a branch with its large black-and-yellow beak and glossy plumage. Just below it is a richly feathered trogon (3), and nearby a cockatoo (17) shows off its raised crest. The composition also includes a great spotted woodpecker (7), hoopoe (10), kingfisher (8), and numerous songbirds such as thrushes (13, 20), finches, warblers, wrens (18), swallows, and wagtails (23). Birds are numbered and artfully positioned on branches or among grasses, some appearing mid-song or in lively poses. The background includes a lightly rendered castle and mountainous scenery, creating a romantic natural setting that enhances the visual charm of the scientific content. Bromme’s work is distinguished by its combination of artistic finesse and scientific observation, offering both elegance and educational insight. This plate is a fine example of 19th-century ornithological illustration, perfect for collectors of antique bird prints, educational material, and natural history ephemera. Condition report: Original lithograph with hand coloring, printed circa 1865. Good condition with soft age toning and only minor foxing near the edges. Strong color and clean paper with no tears or folds. Tips for framing: Frame with a pale cream or warm grey mat to enhance the vivid plumage. A dark wooden or black frame creates a handsome contrast, ideal for a library, conservatory, or bird-themed interior decor.
