About the Item

Portrait of Pieter Schrijver – Mennonite Preacher, Engraving by Jacob Folkema, 1739 This finely detailed 18th-century portrait depicts Pieter Schrijver (1663–1706), a prominent Dutch Mennonite preacher and writer, revered for his theological integrity and service to the Doopsgezinde (Baptist) community. Born in Hoorn and later active in Haarlem, Schrijver was known for his unwavering piety and his dedication to the principles of the early Anabaptist movement in the Dutch Republic. The engraving presents Schrijver in traditional black clerical dress and cap, seated solemnly within an oval cartouche. His expression is serious and contemplative, reflecting his reputation as a devoted religious teacher. Surrounding the portrait is an inscription identifying him as “Pieter Schryver, Leraar der Doopsgezinden. Aetatis LXXIII.” The caption below the portrait is a Dutch poem by B. de Bosch, praising Schrijver’s spiritual fervor and his steadfastness in the face of religious opposition, highlighting his fidelity to his faith and gentle endurance of hardship. This work was engraved in 1739 by Jacob Folkema (1692–1767), a noted Dutch engraver and book illustrator, after a design by his sister Anna Folkema (1695–1768), a rare female artist in the period. Both siblings contributed significantly to 18th-century Dutch print culture, especially in religious and historical subjects. This portrait would appeal to collectors of religious history, Mennonite heritage, Dutch Golden Age theology, and early modern portrait engraving. It’s a touching visual testimony to the quiet influence of Protestant non-conformist leaders in the Netherlands. Condition: Very good condition. Crisp impression with full plate mark. Some light toning and a few small handling marks in margins, not affecting the image. One small white spot in left border. Wide margins preserved. Framing tips: Complement with a black frame and light beige or off-white mat to enhance contrast and respect the portrait’s meditative tone. Technique: Etching and engraving Maker: Jacob Folkema (after Anna Folkema), Netherlands, 1739
