Rufino Tamayo Mixografia Print 21/75, Mexico 1970s
About the Item
In 1973 Tamayo was invited by a lithograph and printmaker, to collaborate on a suite of prints at Taller de Gráfica Mexicana in Mexico City. Mixografia® was developed in direct response to Tamayo’s ambitions. The new technique allowed Tamayo to create prints in relief, as well as registering the texture and very fine surface detail of the artwork. It would prove to be so successful that the entire workshop was renamed Mixografia. Tamayo became known as one of Mexico's greatest painters and a dedicated and prolific printmaker.

Rufino Tamayo
Rufino Tamayo was born in Oaxaca, Mexico, in 1899 to parents Manuel Arellanes and Florentina Tamayo. Tamayo was active in the mid-20th century in Mexico and New York, painting figurative abstraction with surrealist influences. Although Tamayo studied drawing at the Academy of Art at San Carlos as a young adult, he became dissatisfied and eventually decided to study on his own.
