Set of Three Antique Ornithological Prints of Birds of Prey by Traviès, 1849
About the Item
A striking pair of original 19th-century ornithological prints from the Dictionnaire Universel d’Histoire Naturelle, published in Paris in 1849 under the direction of renowned naturalist Charles Dessalines d’Orbigny. These plates were illustrated by Édouard Traviès, a celebrated French wildlife artist known for his precision and elegance in avian portraiture.
Each engraving presents the bird fully hand-colored in rich tones, while the background is left as a finely executed stipple engraving in monochrome, enhancing the central subject. These prints were produced using the stipple and engraving technique, printed by Pellion imp. and engraved by Fournier, both active in mid-19th century France.
