Four Antique Victorian Ornithological Prints by John Gould England, C.1875

John Gould September 1804 – February 1881 Published by Thomas Rymer Jones / Dr Brehm, Cassells Book of Birds, volume III London C.1875. A set of four lithograph prints of parrots, Lory bird and kingfisher in colour with additional hand-colouring on wove papers framed under glass. Hand-coloured lithographs of excellent quality. The authentic prints matted and framed, lovely colour and detail. These have not been observed out of the frames. John Gould (1804 – 1881) was an English ornithologist. He published a number of monographs on birds, illustrated by plates produced by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, He has been considered the father of bird study. His identification of the birds now nicknamed "Darwin's finches" played a role in the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Gould's work is referenced in Charles Darwin's book, On the Origin of Species.

The work for which he is best known is his Monograph of the Trochilidae or the ""Family of Hummingbirds"", which was produced between 1849-1861.
