Soldiers at Rio de la Plata, Eastern Beach in Argentina by Ferrario-Bonatti 1821

About the Item

Antique Print - Soldiers at Rio de la Plata, Eastern Beach - Ferrario-Bonatti 1821 This vibrant hand-colored etching, titled "Soldiers of the Eastern Beach of the Rio de la Plata Region," showcases a vivid depiction of two soldiers from the early 19th century in Argentina. Originating from Giulio Ferrario's renowned series "Il Costume Antico e Moderno" and crafted by the skilled engraver D.K. Bonatti, this work is part of a broader collection that explores global cultural attire and settings. The print features a mounted soldier in traditional attire, engaging with a standing officer outside a stone doorway, illustrating the distinctive military fashion and equine culture of the region. The detailed aquatint technique and original hand coloring enhance the dynamic and historical significance of the image, making it an exquisite collectible. This piece was published in Milan as part of the ambitious 17-volume series issued between 1815 and 1826, with subsequent editions in various Italian cities. The series is celebrated for its academic and artistic contributions to the understanding of cultural costumes and practices, making use of sources from prominent explorers and scholars of the time. Ideal for collectors of military, historical, and South American themed art, this print not only adds aesthetic value but also serves as a cultural artifact reflecting the historical military attire and interactions in Argentina's Rio de la Plata region during the early 1800s. Note that there is an old dry damp spot in the right margin, but this is not touching the image - leaving it perfectly well for matting or framing. The colors are exquisite.
