About the Item
Late 18th century print depicting the volcanic eruptions of Mount Vesuvius published by Raphael Morghen (1758-1833).
Shaped walnut frame with some woodworm marks. Print size cm 39x28.4 - 15.4x11.3 inches, frame size cm 77x61.5 - 30.3x24.2 inches.
Raffaello Morghen Portici 1758 - Florence 1883, son of Filippo Morghen (1730-1807) Florentine engraver and engraver invited to move to Naples by the future Charles III of Bourbon. He specialized in Rome at the school of Giovanni Volpato. In 1794 he moved to Florence to teach woodcut engraving techniques at the Academy of Fine Arts.
He reproduced Raphael's frescoes in the Vatican and Leonardo da Vinci's Supper.
In 1803 he was appointed master engraver for the fine quality of the works he produced.
