About the Item

Suzuki Harunobu woodblock print titled “Meeting her Lover” (parody of the Yugao chapter of "Tale of Genji"), c. 1766. Produced by Academy Arts and copyrighted 1977. Set in a bamboo inlaid chrome frame, the makers label visible in the back. Suzuki Harunobu, a Japanese artist (1725 – 1770), was a designer of woodblock print art in the ukiyo-e style. He was an innovator, and the first to produce full-color prints (nishiki-e) in 1765, rendering the former modes of two- and three-color prints obsolete. During his lifetime and shortly afterwards, many artists imitated his style. A few, such as Harushige, even boasted of their ability to forge the work of the great master. Much about Harunobu's life is unknown. Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art which flourished from the 17th to the 19th century. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties; kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales; travel scenes and landscapes; flora and fauna; and erotica.
