The Sydney International Exhibition Building (Garden Palace) Engraved, c. 1879

About the Item

The Sydney International Exhibition Building (Garden Palace), c. 1879 Minor tears on sheet edges, center fold as issued, vibrant hand coloring, overall good condition. This hand-colored engraving from c. 1879 depicts the magnificent Garden Palace in Sydney, designed by James Barnet for the Sydney International Exhibition. Built in only eight months using iron and timber, the palace was an architectural marvel of its time. It featured electric lights to enable around-the-clock construction, a cutting-edge innovation in the late 19th century. The Garden Palace, with its grand dome and intricate detailing, served as the centerpiece of the exhibition, attracting over 1,022,000 visitors through its gates. The surrounding gardens and elegantly dressed visitors depicted in the print highlight the scale and sophistication of the event, which showcased Australia's growing cultural and industrial achievements. Tragically, this iconic building was destroyed in a devastating six-hour fire on September 22, 1882, leaving this engraving as one of the few visual records of its glory. The vibrant colors and fine details of this print, including its centerfold as issued, make it a historically significant and visually appealing piece. It is ideal for collectors of Australian history or 19th-century architectural prints.

Located in Langweer, NL
Antique print titled 'The International Exhibition Building'. The Sydney International Exhibition opened in the autumn of 1879, but it wasn't really universal and therefore not officially recognised by the Bureau of International Expositions. Melbourne decided to start their exhibition shortly after the one in Sydney, so the participants could transport their exhibits during the winter of 1880. After the exhibitions many of the exhibits were selected to be at display in the Technological, Industrial and Sanitary Museum (now the Powerhouse Museum). The Garden Palace...
