About the Item

An abstract silkscreen in colors on paper titled “Curve” by Takesada Matsutani. Signed in pencil lower right. Titled and annotated 42/75 on the lower left. Published in 1971. This artwork exemplifies minimalist abstraction with a conceptual edge. The composition features a precisely gridded background disrupted by a gentle curvilinear void and anchored by a bold, inverted yellow triangle near the bottom. The visual tension between structure and softness reflects Matsutani’s interest in balance, perception, and spatial awareness. It aligns with the artist's exploration of form and material, which evolved from his association with the postwar Gutai Art Association into a distinctive voice in international contemporary art. Provenance: London Arts Group, Detroit. Dimensions: 29”h x 27.5”w (unframed). In very good vintage condition. Full condition reports are available upon request. Takesada Matsutani (1937 - ) is a celebrated Japanese contemporary artist known for his contributions to the Gutai Art Association and for his innovative abstract and minimalist works. After joining Gutai in 1963, Matsutani developed a unique visual language using vinyl glue, graphite, and printmaking techniques that explored organic forms and material transformation. Following a French government scholarship in 1966, he moved to Paris, where he continued to experiment with silkscreen printing and mixed media. Matsutani’s works have been widely exhibited in major museums including the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Guggenheim Museum (New York), the Dallas Museum of Art, and the National Museum of Art (Osaka). He was also included in the landmark Gutai retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2013. Matsutani's work is held in international collections and has been recognized for its enduring innovation and material sensitivity.
