Traditional Costumes from Frascati, Perugia, Albano and Monastic Orders – 1823
This hand-colored lithograph, labeled “No. 4,” continues the beautifully detailed series of European costume studies published in London on December 1, 1823, by Baldwin, Cradock & Joy. It highlights both regional female headwear from central Italy and distinctive male monastic attire, offering a unique contrast between lay and religious dress in early 19th-century Italian society.
In the top row, three elegantly dressed women represent the towns of Frascati, Perugia, and Albano. The woman from Frascati is adorned with a refined headdress and elaborate gold hairpins, with blue ribbon accents on her gown. Her poised profile emphasizes grace and fashion typical of the area.
The central figure from Perugia wears an ornate white headdress embroidered with lace and pearls, which drapes along her shoulders. Red ribbon and golden earrings complete the look, reflecting Perugia’s artistic and aristocratic traditions. The woman from Albano is shown from behind, allowing the viewer to admire her intricate braided bun held with a golden horizontal pin. Her collar is richly trimmed with pink and green embroidery—suggestive of festive or ceremonial attire.
The lower section shifts in tone, depicting three men associated with monastic or religious life. On the left is a monk from Rome in a simple brown hooded habit and skullcap, his expression solemn. At center, a barefoot pilgrim from Reggio Emilia is depicted from behind, carrying a large straw hat and a blue canteen with a red cross—symbols of penance and devotion. To the right, another monk in a brown cowl gazes outward with a thoughtful expression, his long white beard adding gravitas.
This composition is notable for juxtaposing regional elegance with the austere simplicity of religious devotion. It was likely intended to capture the spectrum of Italian identity—from fashion-conscious townswomen to humble men of the cloth.

Traditional Headwear from Assisi, Naples, Viterbo, and Beyond – 1823 Print
This charming hand-colored lithograph, labeled “No. 2,” is part of a series documenting traditional European costumes, focusing here on regional female headwear. Published in London on December 1, 1823, by Baldwin, Cradock & Joy, it was designed for an English audience eager to explore the rich cultural diversity of the Continent through costume.
The print features six finely rendered bust-length portraits of women from different locations in Italy and France, each showcasing distinctive regional headwear. Their names are labeled beneath each figure: Assisi, Near Naples, Vallestirna, Lyon, Meaux, and Viterbo.
The woman from Assisi wears a delicate lace veil structured in a geometric latticework over her head, with a red flower tucked near her ear and golden hoop earrings adding warmth. Center top, the figure from Near Naples is seen from behind, with her hair elegantly coiled and secured by a horizontal golden pin, finished with blue and red shoulder ribbons—an unusual rear view that highlights hair arrangement and ornament.
The woman from Vallestirna dons a sharply folded white headdress with decorative red and blue shoulder ties and pendant earrings. Her appearance is modest, yet festive. In contrast, the figure from Lyon (bottom left) is depicted in one of the most dramatic regional costumes, wearing a sculptural headdress resembling a bishop’s mitre, paired with a heavy cross pendant and ochre dress...

Traditional Headwear from Italy: Turin, Rome, Subiaco and More – 1823 Print
This hand-colored lithograph, marked “No. 3,” is the third plate from a striking early 19th-century series documenting traditional European costume, particularly regional headwear. Published in London on December 1, 1823, by Baldwin, Cradock & Joy, this print showcases six distinct styles worn by women across Italy, offering a comparative glimpse into local identity, ceremonial dress, and religious symbolism.
At the center top is a dramatic blue hooded garment labeled “Penitent.” Worn with the face obscured, this penitential garment features a small red cross emblem, likely representing affiliation with a religious brotherhood or spiritual order. It stands out starkly from the other portraits and introduces a solemn, sacred tone.
To its left, a view from behind shows a woman from “Settimo” wearing a stylized crown of hairpins radiating like a sunburst, secured by a horizontal golden bar. Below her elaborately embroidered collar, a red ribbon is neatly tied.
To the right, a woman from “Turin” wears an exquisite bonnet of pleated white lace, creating a fan-like halo above her head. Her large gold cross...
