About the Item

Title: Prise de Breda, 24 Février 1793, from Galerie Historique de Versailles Description: This finely engraved print depicts the French forces capturing Breda on February 24, 1795, during the French Revolutionary Wars. The scene features dramatic battlefield activity, with soldiers, officers on horseback, and artillery amidst smoke-filled skies. The city of Breda is visible in the background, creating depth and historical context. The artwork is based on a design by Louis-Joseph Lecomte and executed by the engraver Dubret. Battle of Bréda, 1795 General Darçon (1733–1800), commanding a unit of Dumouriez's Army of the North, led his forces against the Brédal bastion, defended by 3,000 Dutch troops. The intense battle lasted three days, culminating in the bastion’s surrender on the fourth day. The French forces were astonished to capture 250 cannons and a vast stockpile of ammunition. In a moment of revolutionary triumph, soldiers celebrated by dancing the carmagnole in the central square. Though the engraving is titled 1793, the actual battle occurred in 1795. The artwork was printed around 1840, likely as part of the Galerie Historique de Versailles series, commemorating France's revolutionary victories. Its detailed composition captures the drama and jubilation of this historic moment. What makes this print interesting : 1. Historical significance: It commemorates a critical moment in the French Revolutionary Wars, highlighting French military prowess. 2. Artistic execution: The level of detail in the soldiers, artillery, and cityscape demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship. 3. Publication: Part of the Galerie Historique de Versailles series, it reflects the French monarchy's effort to glorify military victories through art. This print is a valuable artifact for its blend of historical narrative and artistic merit.
