About the Item
Ungulates Print: Giraffe, Camel, Bison & Antelope – Antique 1867
This impressive antique print depicts a wide range of ungulates, including giraffes, camels, antelopes, bison, and goats, rendered in detailed hand-coloured engravings. It originates from the Atlas der Natuurlijke Geschiedenis voor scholen en huisgezinnen, adapted into Dutch by T.C. Winkler after Traugott Bromme, and published in Amsterdam by J.C. Loman in 1867. Created for educational use, this print showcases animals from Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas, demonstrating zoological diversity for 19th-century students and families.
The labelled figures include:
1. Camel (Camelus dromedarius)
2. Llama (Lama glama)
3. Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis)
4. Elk or moose (Alces alces)
5. Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus)
6. Gazelle (Gazella species)
7. Chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra)
8. Alpine ibex (Capra ibex)
9. Domestic sheep (Ovis aries)
10. Mouflon (Ovis orientalis musimon)
11. American bison (Bison bison)
12. Musk ox (Ovibos moschatus)
The engraving technique used is copper engraving with delicate hand colouring, allowing precise anatomical lines and realistic textures. Each animal is shown in a naturalistic pose within a stylised landscape, combining scientific accuracy with decorative appeal. Such plates were used widely in schools and libraries, bringing zoological knowledge to life for students in an era before photographic illustration was common.
Condition summary:
Good condition for its age, with light overall toning and occasional small foxing spots mainly in the margins. The paper is strong with no tears or repairs, and the colours remain fresh, vivid, and well-preserved.
Framing tips:
Frame this print in a dark wood, walnut, or black frame with an off-white or cream mount to enhance its fine engraving and natural colours. A gold frame can add a warm antique touch for traditional interiors. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the colours and prevent further toning. This zoological print will enrich any natural history collection, educational interior, or gallery wall, adding both academic significance and timeless decorative beauty.
