About the Item
An antique steel line engraving depicting "Nottingham, and Its Environs," created by Thomas Allom in 1836. The scene portrays Nottingham and the Trent river, with a focus on ploughmen at rest in the foreground, conveying a serene pastoral atmosphere of the area surrounding Nottingham.
Thomas Allom (1804-1872) was a notable architect and topographical illustrator, and his works, including this particular print, were known for their detailed and picturesque qualities. William Watkins, the engraver, has transferred Allom's original study into a print with precision, which was a common practice in the 19th century to disseminate artworks to a broader audience.
This engraving was originally produced for a part-work series titled “The Counties of Chester, Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, Rutland, & Lincoln Illustrated,” published in London between 1836 and 1837. Such series were popular in the 19th century, offering the public detailed views of the British landscape and notable locations.
