Zoology Print of Anteaters, Armadillos, Zebra, Horse and Platypus - c1865

About the Item

Zoology Print of Anteaters, Armadillos, Zebra, Horse and Platypus by T Bromme c1865 This original 19th-century hand-colored lithograph, published around 1865 by German geographer and atlas maker Traugott Bromme, showcases an engaging array of mammals from diverse regions of the world. Taken from Bromme’s influential work Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit, this zoological print highlights species known for their unique physical characteristics and varied ecological niches. At the center stands a prominently featured horse (11), with other equids such as the African zebra (13) and a small donkey or wild ass (12) nearby. Above and around them are a range of fascinating mammals: the giant anteater (7), tamandua (2), and a tree-dwelling anteater (4); armadillos (3 and 4), a pangolin or scaly anteater (8), and the long-nosed echidna (10). Also included are a platypus (9) drinking at the water’s edge and a mole (5) near its burrow. A sharp-snouted animal labeled as 6 is likely a solenodon or another insectivore. Each animal is shown in its natural behavior and landscape, rendered with clean engraving lines and colored washes. The chromolithographic technique used here offers soft shading and lifelike detail. Bromme's approach blended visual charm with scientific clarity, aimed at educating a growing audience of 19th-century students and readers fascinated by the natural world. This antique zoological sheet is an attractive and historically rich example of early printed wildlife illustration. It appeals to collectors of natural history, antique scientific graphics, and early ethnographic and zoological works. Condition report: Original 1860s lithograph by T Bromme with hand coloring. Light age toning and faint foxing near the right margin. Colors strong and paper well preserved with no damage or repairs. Tips for framing: Pair with a warm ivory or pale beige mat to enhance the animal tones and natural settings. A medium-brown or classic black frame provides contrast and an elegant presentation suited for offices, libraries, or natural history collections.
