About the Item

Zoology Print of Boa, Python, Coral Snake and Vipers by T Bromme circa 1865 This dramatic 19th-century hand-colored lithograph, published circa 1865 by German geographer and natural history illustrator Traugott Bromme, presents a vivid selection of snakes from tropical and temperate regions. Taken from Bromme’s *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, this print is a fine example of 19th-century zoological art used for public education and scientific curiosity. At the center of the composition are two large constrictors—a coiled boa (12) and a python wrapped around a tree (7)—both shown in mid-movement to emphasize their muscular power. At the base lies a massive anaconda (5), thick-bodied and nestled in the undergrowth. Nearby are vipers and pit vipers (3, 10), with characteristic broad heads and coiled alert postures. A coral snake (8) winds its way through treetops, marked with bright red and black bands. Also included are a green tree snake (6), a hooded cobra (2), and various other non-venomous colubrids shown in different positions, from striking to resting. The lush jungle setting and forested background, combined with the serpents’ energetic coils and colors, create a rich tableau of herpetological life. This plate reflects both the fascination and fear associated with snakes during the 19th century, a time when natural history publications sought to classify and illustrate the world's fauna with increasing precision. Bromme’s use of color, motion, and environment gives this print a dynamic and engaging presence that is as decorative as it is educational. Condition report: Original hand-colored lithograph by T Bromme, circa 1865. Light toning and mild foxing at the outer margins. Strong coloration and sharp detail. No tears or repairs. Tips for framing: Use a natural beige or deep green mat to echo the jungle palette. A black or dark mahogany frame adds contrast and enhances the intricate detail of the snakes, making this a standout piece for a study, office, or natural history collection.
