About the Item
Zoology Print of Crabs, Lobster, Horseshoe Crab and Plankton by T Bromme c1865
This finely hand-colored lithograph was published circa 1865 by German geographer and natural history author Traugott Bromme. It comes from his important educational work *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, and this particular plate provides a remarkable survey of marine crustaceans and related invertebrates, both macroscopic and microscopic.
At the top of the image are various crab species, including a hermit crab (1), spider crab (5), brightly patterned reef crabs (4, 6), and swimming or fiddler crabs (2, 7). In the center, a large lobster (8) is rendered in rich green tones with fine anatomical detail, paired with the prehistoric-looking horseshoe crab (17), shown from above with its distinctive tail spine and segmented armor.
Surrounding these larger creatures are smaller marine invertebrates, including shrimp (13), amphipods, copepods, and barnacle larvae (10, 16, 20, 21). Also shown are microscopic crustaceans like cyclops and daphnia (19, 9), which play vital roles in aquatic ecosystems and early 19th-century biological research.
Bromme’s combination of scientific accuracy and aesthetic clarity made his prints ideal for teaching and public engagement with the natural sciences. This lithograph exemplifies the 19th-century interest in taxonomy and marine biology, rendered with precision and elegance.
This is a highly collectible item for enthusiasts of antique natural history, marine life, and the development of early zoological illustration.
Condition report:
Original hand-colored lithograph by T Bromme, circa 1865. Mild age toning and a few small foxing spots at the edges. Image clean and well-preserved with strong color and no damage.
Tips for framing:
Pair with a natural ivory or sandy beige mat to echo the tones of sea and shore. A dark wood or black frame adds contrast and brings a refined, museum-quality appearance, perfect for marine-themed collections, libraries, or educational interiors.
