Zoology Print of Crocodiles, Monitor Lizards and Iguanas by T Bromme c1865
This original 19th-century hand-colored lithograph, published around 1865 by German geographer and naturalist Traugott Bromme, showcases a wide array of reptiles in vivid detail. Taken from his celebrated *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, this print offers a taxonomic and artistic survey of crocodilians, lizards, iguanas, and other reptiles from tropical and subtropical regions.
At the center of the composition are multiple species of crocodiles and alligators, including a large gharial (1), distinguished by its long, narrow snout, and broad-jawed alligators (2 and 5) depicted basking on land or entering water. Surrounding them are various lizards including a monitor lizard (3), chameleon (10), green iguana (7), and several smaller tropical species crawling on rocks and tree limbs.
Among the tree-dwelling species are the flying dragon (9), a gliding lizard with extended rib membranes, and arboreal iguanas shown in dynamic, coiled poses. A legless reptile, likely a glass lizard or amphisbaena (13), is depicted in serpentine form on the ground, adding diversity to the plate. Each animal is labeled and positioned to reflect its movement and ecological niche, whether terrestrial, aquatic, or arboreal.
The print is a fine example of 19th-century zoological art, combining anatomical observation with imaginative landscape composition. Bromme’s atlases were intended as visual education for a general audience and remain highly collectible for their clarity, craftsmanship, and insight into early natural science.
Condition report:
Original hand-colored lithograph by T Bromme, circa 1865. Light age toning and scattered foxing near the upper edge. Colors remain sharp and paper is in solid condition with no tears or repairs.
Tips for framing:
Use a natural tan or light olive mat to match the earthy and tropical tones of the reptiles. A medium-dark wood or black frame will provide contrast and emphasize the fine engraving, making this print ideal for a study, library, or zoological-themed interior.
