This original 19th-century hand-colored lithograph was published circa 1865 by German geographer and atlas-maker Traugott Bromme. It is part of his renowned educational series, likely from the *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, and it showcases large land mammals from Africa, Asia, and South America with remarkable clarity and attention to anatomical form.
At the center of the composition is a majestic Indian elephant, surrounded by an assemblage of similarly massive herbivores and forest dwellers. Below the elephant is a large hippopotamus, depicted emerging from vegetation near the water’s edge. A one-horned Indian rhinoceros is shown wading into a river, rendered with distinctive skin folds. Also included are multiple species of tapirs from Asia and the Americas, shown both at rest and in movement, as well as the rare Malayan tapir.
In the upper section of the plate are forest hogs or wild boars, likely babirusas or bush pigs, included for their shared ecological niche as large land mammals. Each species is labeled and positioned within a soft landscape of grasses, water, and forest cover, reflecting Bromme’s use of naturalistic backdrops to enhance educational and visual appeal.
