Zoology Print of Frogs, Salamanders, Axolotl and Caecilian by T Bromme c1865
This original 19th-century hand-colored lithograph was published around 1865 by German geographer and natural history writer Traugott Bromme. Taken from his educational series *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, this plate offers a fascinating visual survey of amphibians from across the globe, including frogs, toads, salamanders, and more unusual species such as the axolotl and caecilian.
At the center is a prominent depiction of a large frog or bullfrog, surrounded by a variety of smaller amphibians in natural poses. Featured species include brightly patterned frogs (5, 6), a green tree frog (4), and toads in crouched and leaping postures (1, 3). Several salamanders are illustrated on land and in water, including the spotted fire salamander (7), a pink cave salamander (10), and a newt (8). Notably, an axolotl (2), with its external gills and aquatic body, is shown in mid-motion. A long, limbless caecilian (12) is also included, an unusual burrowing amphibian resembling a snake or worm.
The animals are arranged within a moist, lush habitat of shaded leaves, grass, and shallow pools, illustrating the ecological diversity of amphibians. Each figure is labeled and carefully rendered in lithographic line and hand-colored wash, capturing the textures of skin, scale, and water.
This print is a rare and beautiful example of early zoological illustration focused on amphibians, created at a time when European science was still classifying and discovering many of these creatures. It appeals to collectors of natural history, antique prints, and students of early biology.
Condition report:
Original hand-colored lithograph by T Bromme, circa 1865. Good condition with mild age toning and minor foxing at the outer margins. Strong color and clean paper with no tears.
Tips for framing:
Use a natural white or pale green mat to highlight the earthy tones and aquatic detail. A dark wood or black frame will provide contrast and sophistication, making this ideal for scientific interiors, libraries, or nature-focused collections.
