About the Item
Zoology Print of Giraffe, Camel, Bison, Deer and Antelope by T Bromme c1865
This 19th-century hand-colored zoological lithograph is an original print by German publisher and cartographer Traugott Bromme, dating from around 1865. Taken from his renowned Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit, the plate offers a grand visual survey of hoofed mammals from across the globe, presented in lifelike poses and naturalistic settings.
Dominating the composition is a tall giraffe (3), surrounded by an array of ruminants and large grazing animals, including a dromedary camel (1), American bison (11), and musk ox (12). A large stag or red deer (4) stands to the left, while a mountain ibex (8) and mouflon sheep (9) occupy the rocky cliffs to the right. Other species include the antelope (6), chamois (10), nilgai or blue bull (5), roe deer (7), and Barbary sheep or arui (2).
Each animal is labeled and carefully depicted in proportion, with emphasis on antlers, horns, and body posture. The subtle coloring enhances fur textures and landscape depth, offering both scientific accuracy and decorative appeal. Bromme’s atlas prints were designed to educate readers on global biodiversity, blending zoological study with elegant visual presentation. His works are now prized by collectors of antique prints and early natural history.
This print exemplifies mid-19th-century European scientific illustration and remains a richly detailed and well-composed study of ungulate species from Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
Condition report:
Original hand-colored lithograph by T Bromme, circa 1865. Slight age toning and scattered marginal foxing. Colors fresh and paper structurally sound with no repairs or tears.
Tips for framing:
Use a light neutral mat such as ivory or stone to complement the earthy palette. A natural wood or dark brown frame works well to enhance the zoological theme and give the print a distinguished presence on a library or gallery wall.
