About the Item

Zoology Print of Octopus, Slugs, Sea Shells and Marine Mollusks by T Bromme c1865 This beautifully hand-colored lithograph, published circa 1865 by German geographer and educator Traugott Bromme, showcases a diverse range of mollusks and related marine life. The plate comes from Bromme’s highly regarded educational atlas *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, a comprehensive 19th-century work aimed at bringing natural history to a broad audience. At the center of the image is a highly detailed depiction of an octopus (8), with extended tentacles and intricate suction cup patterning. Around it are several other cephalopods, including a squid (9), cuttlefish (10), and smaller molluscan forms. The plate also includes slugs (11) and snails (12, 21), drawn with careful attention to their textures and coiling. A rich array of seashells is displayed across the lower portion of the print, featuring conch shells (19), cowries (17), limpets (25), and various spiral, turreted, and bivalve shells (13–16, 22). These are presented in both natural and cutaway forms, allowing a glimpse into their internal structure. A few more obscure or primitive marine invertebrates—like a chiton (1), a nudibranch (18), and a feathered worm (4)—round out the plate. Each figure is precisely labeled and arranged with symmetry and clarity. Bromme’s lithographs were celebrated for their combination of scientific rigor and visual elegance, making them valuable both as teaching tools and decorative objects. Condition report: Original hand-colored lithograph by T Bromme, circa 1865. Very good condition with mild age toning and minimal foxing. Strong impression with excellent color retention and clean paper. Tips for framing: Pair with a cream or soft sand-colored mat to enhance the natural tones of the marine forms. A black or dark walnut frame will provide elegant contrast, perfect for a coastal interior, a natural history display, or a refined study or library.

Zoology Print of Jellyfish, Corals and Marine Invertebrates by T Bromme - c1865
Located in Langweer, NL
Zoology Print of Jellyfish, Corals and Marine Invertebrates by T Bromme c1865 This exceptional hand-colored lithograph, printed circa 1865 by German geographer and educator Traugott Bromme, illustrates a diverse selection of cnidarians and lower marine invertebrates. The plate is taken from Bromme’s influential *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, which served as both an educational tool and a visual record of 19th-century scientific understanding. The composition prominently features several jellyfish species (2, 3, 4, 5, 6), each drawn in exquisite detail to showcase their translucent bodies, flowing tentacles, and umbrella-like bells. One species (1) resembles a comb jelly or ctenophore, with internal rows of cilia and trailing appendages, hinting at the era’s growing knowledge of deep-sea life. Equally striking are the representations of corals and polyp colonies. A large central brain coral (10) is surrounded by branching and staghorn coral species (9, 11), red coral (12), and coral polyps (7, 8), including both individual and colonial organisms. Small-scale illustrations of microscopic life (15–19) suggest zooplankton, sponges, or protists, rendered with the precision of early microscopy. Bromme’s work was aimed at making natural science accessible and visually compelling. The accuracy and artistic quality of this lithograph make it especially desirable for collectors of marine biology and antique scientific illustration...
