About the Item

Zoology Print of Scallops, Oysters, Mussels and Bivalve Shells by T Bromme c1865 This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph, published circa 1865 by German geographer and author Traugott Bromme, illustrates a wide variety of mollusks and bivalve shells in exquisite detail. Drawn from Bromme’s *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, this plate is a fine example of early scientific illustration created for education and natural history enthusiasts. The composition is centered around some of the most recognizable bivalves and marine invertebrates, including a scallop (3a and 5b), oyster (1), and mussel (6), the latter shown with its byssus threads. At the center is a barnacle-covered rock (10), and nearby are intricate clam and cockle shells (8, 9, 11), as well as smaller forms like razor clams (16), saddle oysters, ark clams, and tellins. A few mollusks are shown with their soft tissues revealed or with operculums in place, offering anatomical insight. Others, like the shipworm (18) and various segmented siphons or tubes, provide rare views of lesser-known aquatic life forms. Spiral and fan-shaped forms, textured outer shells, and iridescent inner layers are all carefully depicted, reflecting both biological curiosity and decorative appeal. This print was created during a time of expanding scientific literacy and remains highly collectible for its craftsmanship and historical relevance. It appeals to collectors of antique shell prints, marine biology, or 19th-century natural science. Condition report: Original hand-colored lithograph by T Bromme, circa 1865. Very good condition with soft age toning and minor foxing at the edges. Clean image with strong detail and no tears or damage. Tips for framing: Frame with a warm off-white or parchment mat to highlight the soft shell tones. A dark wood or black frame offers contrast, suitable for a study, coastal-themed interior, or natural history collection. A shadowbox frame could also add depth to this richly detailed composition.
