Zoology Print of Sea Turtles and Land Tortoises by T Bromme circa 1865
This original hand-colored lithograph, printed circa 1865 by German geographer and publisher Traugott Bromme, features a beautifully arranged selection of turtles and tortoises from both aquatic and terrestrial environments. The plate was issued as part of Bromme’s *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, a widely circulated 19th-century educational atlas combining zoological, ethnographic, and geographical subjects.
The illustration displays a variety of chelonian species, carefully rendered with attention to shell patterns, flipper shape, and behavioral differences. In the center, a large sea turtle (6) glides through the water, accompanied by another sea turtle species (3) and the streamlined leatherback turtle (7), depicted with flippers extended in a swimming pose. Along the shoreline and on land are several terrestrial and freshwater turtles including the Indian star tortoise (4), a box turtle (1), a red-eared slider (10), and a snapping turtle (5). The lower portion also includes a yellow-bellied terrapin (2), a softshell or mata mata turtle (8), and a hawksbill turtle (9).
Each specimen is labeled and set in naturalistic surroundings of tropical foliage, rocky streams, and riverbanks. The fine lithographic linework and subtle hand coloring reflect the craftsmanship typical of mid-19th-century natural history printing. These visual characteristics made Bromme’s work both scientifically informative and visually captivating for a broad audience.
This antique zoological print is ideal for collectors of turtle illustrations, 19th-century scientific works, or decorative educational art with a focus on biodiversity.
