About the Item

Zoology Print of Shark, Sunfish, Seahorse and Pufferfish by T Bromme c1865 This original hand-colored lithograph, printed circa 1865 by German geographer and scientific publisher Traugott Bromme, presents a captivating collection of unusual and exotic marine species. The plate comes from his educational atlas *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, which brought together zoological, geographical, and ethnographic knowledge in richly illustrated format for a 19th-century audience. The composition features a variety of marine life, focusing on oddities and distinctive body types. At the top is a large blunt-nosed shark (1), alongside an eel (8) and a coiled ray-like creature (possibly a torpedo ray or skate). A hammerhead shark (2), sawfish (3), and stingray (5) complete the group of large cartilaginous fish. Among bony fish, a large sunfish or mola mola (10) takes center stage, with a number of smaller, ornately patterned species around it, including a triggerfish (12), pufferfish (9), boxfish (11), and butterflyfish (13). Particularly striking are the seahorse (15) and a lionfish or flying gurnard (16) with extended pectoral fins. A sturgeon (6) and several slender eel-like fish (14, 7) complete the taxonomy. Each creature is numbered and arranged for visual clarity, with crisp lithographic lines and soft hand coloring that emphasizes textures, patterns, and fin shapes. The result is a print that captures both scientific interest and decorative beauty, ideal for collectors of marine-themed illustrations or antique zoological art. Condition report: Original hand-colored lithograph by T Bromme, circa 1865. Light foxing near the left margin and soft age toning throughout. Strong print quality with vivid detailing and no tears or folds. Tips for framing: Frame with a pale blue or warm ivory mat to evoke the marine setting. A dark wood or black frame offers classic contrast and suits both modern and traditional interiors. Perfect for a coastal-themed room, study, or scientific collection.

Zoology Print of Swordfish, Tuna, Anglerfish and Exotic Fishes by T Bromme c1865
Located in Langweer, NL
Zoology Print of Swordfish, Tuna, Anglerfish and Exotic Fishes by T Bromme c1865 This highly detailed hand-colored lithograph was published circa 1865 by German geographer and scientific illustrator Traugott Bromme. It is part of his ambitious natural history series *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, combining zoological knowledge with elegant visual presentation for 19th-century educational use. This particular plate highlights a variety of marine and deep-sea fish, focusing on distinct anatomical adaptations. Dominating the top of the composition is a powerful swordfish (14) with its extended bill, flanked by a streamlined tuna (15), herring (13), and mackerel-like species (12). Below them is an extraordinary anglerfish (4), shown with its characteristic lure and wide, flattened head—typical of deep-sea species. Also included are armored or scaleless fish like the fangtooth (3), dragonfish (1), and several unusual tropical or reef species with prominent spines or patterning. A garfish or needlefish (20) stretches across the bottom, opposite a striped wrasse or perch (5). Other species include the European sea bass (7), gobies and blennies (8, 9, 10), a butterflyfish (16), and a few primitive or armored species with bony plates (19). The composition reflects Bromme’s emphasis on both scientific accuracy and visual curiosity, with each fish labeled and arranged to showcase size, structure, and behavior. These images were essential in a pre-photographic age for understanding marine biodiversity and taxonomy. This is a compelling example of antique scientific illustration...
