About the Item
Zoology Print of Spiders, Scorpions, Flies and Lice by T Bromme circa 1865
This original 19th-century hand-colored lithograph, published around 1865 by German geographer and naturalist Traugott Bromme, features a striking collection of arachnids and insects. Issued as part of Bromme’s celebrated *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, this plate illustrates a diverse range of small terrestrial invertebrates with scientific clarity and artistic precision.
At the center of the image is a large scorpion (18), flanked by a prominent tarantula or wolf spider (19) and several smaller species of orb-weaving and ground spiders (20, 21, 22). Also featured is a harvestman or “daddy longlegs” (24), and a centipede and millipede (17, 16), showing the variation within arthropod forms.
Flying insects include houseflies (4, 9), blowflies (3), mosquitoes (2), bees and wasps (5, 6), and a wide variety of parasitic insects such as lice (23, 26), fleas (15), and mites (25). The inclusion of both winged and wingless species demonstrates Bromme’s commitment to depicting a complete cross-section of insect and arachnid life.
Each figure is clearly numbered and rendered with fine lithographic detail and delicate hand coloring. The clean, symmetrical layout reflects 19th-century efforts to classify life systematically, with this plate likely intended to accompany lessons in biology, entomology, or hygiene.
This zoological print is ideal for collectors of antique insect illustrations, scientific history, or those interested in the evolution of entomological studies.
