Zoology Print of Tiger, Lion, Hyena, Marsupials and Wild Cats by T Bromme c1865

About the Item

Zoology Print of Tiger, Lion, Hyena, Marsupials and Wild Cats by T Bromme c1865 This original 19th-century hand-colored lithograph is from the work of German publisher and geographer Traugott Bromme, likely printed around 1865 in his educational atlas series such as the Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit. The image presents a vivid zoological study of carnivorous mammals and marsupials, meticulously illustrated and numbered, with species from several continents rendered in naturalistic postures. Prominently featured at the bottom is a large Bengal tiger (1) and an African lion (2), both surrounded by members of the Felidae family such as a spotted hyena (3), lynx (4), puma or mountain lion (5), wildcat (6), and domestic or feral cat (16). Marsupials are represented by a Virginia opossum (7), bandicoot or bilby (8), Tasmanian devil (9), sugar glider or possum (10), numbat or marsupial mole (11), tree kangaroo (12), koalas (13), kangaroo (14), and wombat (15). Each animal is positioned in a habitat-appropriate setting with fine linework and delicate coloring typical of mid-19th-century German chromolithography. The earthy tones and soft landscape details emphasize the natural environments and behavioral attitudes of the creatures, offering both scientific documentation and decorative appeal. Bromme’s atlases played a significant role in 19th-century education, combining geography, ethnography, and natural history into richly illustrated volumes. Today, his zoological plates are collected as fine examples of early scientific art and period printing craftsmanship. Condition report: Original hand-colored lithograph by T Bromme, circa 1865. Good condition with light age toning and minimal foxing at the margins. Paper is strong and colors are clear. Tips for framing: Frame with a neutral mat in ivory or pale sage to harmonize with the animal tones. A medium or dark wood frame adds warmth and draws focus to the natural detail, making this ideal for a study, library, or gallery wall.
