About the Item

Zoology Print of Trout, Catfish, Eels and Flatfish by T Bromme circa 1865 This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph, created by German geographer and scientific illustrator Traugott Bromme, was published around 1865 in his acclaimed *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*. The plate features an extensive collection of freshwater and coastal fish species, drawn and colored with great attention to anatomical accuracy and variation in form. The upper portion of the composition includes species such as trout or salmon (1), herring (5), and perch (2), along with smaller forage fish (4, 6, 9). A large predatory pike (3) with its elongated snout and powerful jaw dominates the center, accompanied by catfish (10, 11) and burbot (14), known for their barbels and bottom-feeding habits. A variety of benthic and deep-dwelling species are also included, such as a loach or mudfish (12), lamprey or hagfish (19), and several types of eel (17, 18), depicted in natural swimming curves. At the bottom right lies a flatfish (15), rendered in its typical asymmetrical form. Additional species like the tench (7), carp (16), and other river fish complete the visual taxonomy. This lithograph combines detailed illustration with educational intent, presenting species recognizable to 19th-century European readers and naturalists. Bromme’s work was intended as both a visual encyclopedia and a source of wonder about the diversity of life. Today, the print stands out for its finely balanced composition, earthy aquatic tones, and the elegance of its scientific illustration. It is ideal for collectors of ichthyology, antique zoological prints, or 19th-century educational art. Condition report: Original hand-colored lithograph by T Bromme, circa 1865. In good condition with mild age toning and slight foxing to outer margins. Colors strong, no folds or tears. Tips for framing: Frame with a neutral mat in ivory or soft aqua tones to reflect the aquatic setting. A medium-dark wood or black frame adds contrast and sophistication, making this a perfect fit for libraries, study spaces, or vintage natural history displays.

Zoology Print of Swordfish, Tuna, Anglerfish and Exotic Fishes by T Bromme c1865
Located in Langweer, NL
Zoology Print of Swordfish, Tuna, Anglerfish and Exotic Fishes by T Bromme c1865 This highly detailed hand-colored lithograph was published circa 1865 by German geographer and scientific illustrator Traugott Bromme. It is part of his ambitious natural history series *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, combining zoological knowledge with elegant visual presentation for 19th-century educational use. This particular plate highlights a variety of marine and deep-sea fish, focusing on distinct anatomical adaptations. Dominating the top of the composition is a powerful swordfish (14) with its extended bill, flanked by a streamlined tuna (15), herring (13), and mackerel-like species (12). Below them is an extraordinary anglerfish (4), shown with its characteristic lure and wide, flattened head—typical of deep-sea species. Also included are armored or scaleless fish like the fangtooth (3), dragonfish (1), and several unusual tropical or reef species with prominent spines or patterning. A garfish or needlefish (20) stretches across the bottom, opposite a striped wrasse or perch (5). Other species include the European sea bass (7), gobies and blennies (8, 9, 10), a butterflyfish (16), and a few primitive or armored species with bony plates (19). The composition reflects Bromme’s emphasis on both scientific accuracy and visual curiosity, with each fish labeled and arranged to showcase size, structure, and behavior. These images were essential in a pre-photographic age for understanding marine biodiversity and taxonomy. This is a compelling example of antique scientific illustration...
