Zoology Print of Whales, Seals, Dolphins and Sea Cows by T Bromme circa 1865

About the Item

Zoology Print of Whales, Seals, Dolphins and Sea Cows by T Bromme circa 1865 This original 19th-century hand-colored lithograph, published circa 1865 by German geographer and scientific illustrator Traugott Bromme, presents a captivating selection of marine mammals. Drawn from Bromme’s renowned *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, the plate showcases ocean and coastal species that fascinated naturalists of the time. Occupying the lower half of the composition is a dramatic seascape with three large whales spouting water, including a sperm whale (8), a humpback or right whale (2), and possibly a blue whale (1). A narwhal with its distinctive tusk (7) swims alongside, while the tail of a diving whale and a harbor seal add movement and realism to the scene. Above, two walruses with bristled faces (3) rest on coastal rocks, while a spotted seal (4) enters the water nearby. In the top portion of the print are two manatees or dugongs (4 and 5), aquatic herbivores often mistaken for mythical mermaids. A dolphin (6) breaks the water’s surface with its jaw open, and another seal pup (10) is shown on an ice floe or rocky ledge. This chromolithograph is characteristic of Bromme’s approach to scientific art: accurate, engaging, and presented in natural settings that enhance the viewer’s understanding. These prints were created to educate the growing middle-class audience in Europe about the world’s fauna during an age of exploration and scientific curiosity. Today, Bromme’s zoological illustrations are appreciated for their historical context, aesthetic quality, and craftsmanship, making this piece ideal for collectors of antique natural history, marine biology, or 19th-century educational prints. Condition report: Original 1860s lithograph with hand coloring. In very good condition with light even age toning and minor marginal foxing. The paper is clean, and colors remain vivid and well preserved. Tips for framing: Frame with a soft ocean-blue or ivory mat to echo the marine tones. A dark wood or deep navy frame enhances the contrast of the sea creatures and adds a refined finish, ideal for a coastal-themed room, study, or educational space.
