About the Item

17th century French grotesque tapestry An antique French Beauvais tapestry from the 17th century, depicting a Grotesque scene with an Elephant and performers from an exotic Circus. This rare tapestry is a fine example of both the Beauvais style and the Grotesque design, as it envisions a grand Elephant at center, and several other circus performers in its various segments. This is a fine, hand-woven piece, composed of wool with silk inlay. Enclosed within a trompe l'oeil picture frame style border. This tapestry is from a set of five interrelated Grotesque tapestries from late 17th century France, in the Beauvais workshop, from the renowned designer, Jean Berain. Known as the 'Berain Grotesques' after the name of the designer, and in its rendering of the 'grotti' style of famous Roman palaces, these tapestries were immensely popular in the late 17th and early 18th century in France. Another version of this Berain Grotesque tapestry can be found in New York City's Metropolitan Museum. Hanging: The tapestry comes ready for hanging, with linen backing and a strip of hook and loop tape at the top end, which can be connected to the opposite side of the supplied hook and loop tape, which could be tacked to your wall. For those who prefer the use of a tapestry rod, we can add the appropriate size loops to accommodate your needs.
