About the Item
Remarkable in size, subject and palette, this large tapestry presents Hanna Ripa's homage to a painting by Gösta Adrian-Nilsson, using a rich variety of vividly hued, appliquéd fabric. Adrian-Nilsson -- known in Sweden as GAN -- was the nation's leading practitioner of Cubism, often with a stylized Art Deco flavor, and often presenting sailors and nighttime views of the city. Here, the subject is an explorer who has landed on a beach, his ship behind him, kneeling down to thank providential God, his good fortune indicated by the rolled dice at his feet. Ripa has chosen an array of fabrics in shades of pink, cobalt, ocean blue, sand and chocolate. The artist has "signed" the tapestry with her monogram as well as GAN's, on the lower lefthand and righthand corners. The reverse includes a narrative description of the tapestry in Swedish.
