About the Item

An early carved wooden wall relief by French artist and designer Jean Touret (1916–2004). Executed in the formative period of his career, this piece reveals the hand-hewn surfaces, sculptural rhythm, and architectural presence that would later define Touret’s celebrated work with Atelier Marolles. Its tactile composition reflects his sensitivity to natural materials and his search for a distinctly modern yet timeless language in wood. This relief has been confirmed as an early work by Jean Touret, in which one can clearly sense the lingering influence of Maurice Denis and Georges Lacombe. The synthesis of Denis’s symbolic, spiritual approach to form and Lacombe’s expressive treatment of carved wood resonates throughout the piece, while at the same time foreshadowing Touret’s own modernist vocabulary. It stands as a testament to the transitional moment when Touret was developing his unique artistic voice.
