"Flute and Bass, " Unique Repoussé Panel with Musicians, Early Soviet Republic

About the Item

A truly remarkable survivor from the early days of the Russian republic, not long after the Russian Revolution but before the Stalinist era, this repoussé panel depicts a swan-necked bass player and a a mustachioed flutist, playing side by side, surrounded by a highly-textured aureole, all hand-hammered by an artisan of the first order. The workshop that produced this piece attached a label to the reverse -- which survives to this day. These workshops rose up in Russia after the revolution to promote traditional Russian folk arts and employ artisans -- such as icon painters -- who were no longer allowed to work for the church.
