About the Item

Olympic Commemorative High Relief Wall Sculpture—“Athens “1996” Dimensions: 51" W x 27.5" H x 3" D Medium: Metal-infused fiberglass with applied natural stone aggregate A dramatic and sculptural tribute to the centennial of the modern Olympic Games, this large-format wall-mounted relief is titled “Athens 1996” and features a high-relief rendering of a classical male discus thrower captured in mid-motion. The athletic figure, sculpted in the style of ancient Greek statuary, extends his arm in a sweeping arc, evoking the famed “Discobolus” by Myron—one of the most enduring images of physical perfection and disciplined movement in classical art. Carved into the background are the inscriptions “ATHENS,” “ILAN,” and “MCMXCVI” (1996), directly referencing the 100th anniversary of the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896. The name “Ilan” may refer to the artist, an atelier, or an Olympic bid entity connected to the work’s origin—possibly created for an official exhibition or public commemorative display. Crafted from metal-infused fiberglass, the piece has the visual weight of oxidized bronze or aged stone while remaining light enough for wall mounting. The surface is enriched with applied natural stone aggregate, giving it a distressed, archaeological quality. The five Olympic rings appear subtly behind the figure in muted tints, symbolizing unity and global athleticism. The back is finished in textured white with an integrated hanging wire. Intended to hang horizontally, though it may also be displayed vertically with your modification. Cracking and surface erosion are deliberate and part of the artist’s visual language of timeless endurance and historic excavation. An arresting wall sculpture that bridges classical heritage and modern celebration—ideal for collectors of Olympic memorabilia, classical revival art, or monumental postmodern design. Condition: Structurally sound with artistically intended surface cracking and patina. No restoration. Ready to hang.

1950s Bronze Italian Relief Panel of a Discobulo
By Myron (Sculptor)

The bronze panel depicts a discus thrower, capturing a dynamic moment of athleticism. This is inspired by the ancient Greek statue "Discobolus" (Discus Thrower) by Myron, an iconic representation of athletic grace and form. The figure's body is bent forward, with one arm reaching back to hold the discus, while the other arm stretches forward, illustrating the balance and tension in the moment just before the throw. This posture emphasizes muscular definition and the natural movement of the body in action, typical of ancient Greek athletic sculptures...
