"Running Eve", Fabulous Art Deco-Influenced Folk Art Relief Sculpture, Marble

About the Item

A fabulous example of Art Deco-influenced Folk Art, this panel features a running Eve figure, her hair flowing in the wind, in carved King of Prussia marble, set into a pine frame carved with nude figures on all sides. The artist was "Knute," probably a student at Temple University in 1936, and his theme demonstrates the fascination with Biblical themes among folk artists in the 1920s and 30s. The central panel, carved from light grey marble, shows Eve flanked by a coiled serpent on one side, and what looks like the tail of a fish on the other. Two of the flanking nudes in carved pine have their arms raised high, and the others seem to be wrestling with each other, perhaps referring to the conflict surrounding Adam and Eve's departure from the Garden of Eden.
