"Male Nude Frieze", Art Deco Sculptural Panel, Bertoni, Traction Avant Designer
About the Item
In the 1930s, when Italy was once again valorizing and idealizing the male nude -- witness the famous crescent of nude male athletes at the Foro Italico in Rome -- this silvered bronze panel was sculpted with a frieze of strong figures to honor a distinguished luminary. The central nude is flanked by two lines of broad-shouldered, confident male figures, and the entire ensemble is carried by two male caryatids below. The sculptor was Flaminio Bertoni, best known today for designing the Traction Avant automobile, produced by Citroën and revered today for its unibody construction and sleek design. The panel is signed in the lower lefthand corner.
