A magnificent signed BURLE MARX Watermelon Tourmaline FORMA LIVRE monumental Brooch in 18 Karat Gold by the esteemed and highly collectible artist jeweler and dating to the Mid-Century Modern period, circa 1970. The magnificent jewel features a stunning free form (Forma Livre) carved Watermelon Tourmaline of impressive size, color and form. The gorgeous gem is set in a brushed 18 Karat Yellow Gold Design. The brooch, clip pin dates to circa 1970 and is Mid-Century Modern Jewelry design at its most vivid and desirable. The works of Burle Marx are considered fine Mid-Century Modern Art. This large watermelon tourmaline brooch is one of the largest, most impressive and dramatic pieces of Burle Marx jewelry that we have seen. The Watermelon Tourmaline has purple and green coloration with a stunning carved relief design. The gem is surrounded by a brushed 18 Karat Yellow Gold wide bezel. The brooch is 2 1/8 inches (54mm) by 1 7/8 inches (48mm). The brooch weighs 25.1 dwt, 39 grams. The brooch or scarf pin has a double stick pin closure. The brooch is hallmarked BURLE MARX 750 on the reverse. Provenance: Paris, France estate. Brazilian jeweler Haroldo Burle-Marx creates hand-crafted and artistic pieces adorned with native Brazilian precious stones including opal, garnet, tourmaline, amethyst, and aquamarine. His designs are historically and mythically inspired but rendered with a modern sensibility and techniques. His work is held in such esteem that since 1955, Burle-Marx has been commissioned by members of the Brazilian government to make pieces of jewelry for visiting dignitaries and their first ladies. Haroldo Burle Marx was particularly known for his use of large gemstones, often fashioned by carving or tumbling rather than being faceted, a technique he invented in 1948. The gold mounting is decorated with the fine florentined engraving often seen on Marx pieces. The brooch is an iconic piece and would be immediately recognizable by any Burle Marx collector. Marx made a name for himself amongst prominent European collectors and socialites. His work as an artist-jeweler is distinct and memorable. He was chosen by the Brazilian government to create gifts for visiting heads of state and their wives including Empress Nagako of Japan, Empress Farah Diba of Iran, Queen Margarethe of Denmark and Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He was also a favored jeweler to Natalie Wood and Merle Oberon. On of his most important commissions was a gem-encrusted cross made for Pope John Paul II.
