About the Item
This is a rare Art Deco Egyptian Revival 14 Karat Gold and Enamel Brooch depicting Heremakhet (Greek: Harmakhis). Heremakhet is a Hieracosphinx who has the body of a lion and the head of falcon and is representative of the god Horus. It is related to the Sphinx. The name was created by Herodotus (484 BC- 425 BC) the Greek historian whilst on his journeys to Egypt. The hieracosphinx is depicted in a wall relief at the Temple of Horus in Edfu.
The stunning brooch is 14 Karat Gold with beautiful ename decoration throughout. The brooch is in wonderful conditon and has its original C-clasp pin stem. The brooch is hallmarked 585 for 14 Karat Gold. The brooch could be easily converted to a pendant necklace if desired.
For centuries, Ancient Egypt has held the fascination of the public and continues to inspire artists and designers alike. With the discoveries of Egyptian tombs, and the treasures within, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the exotically opulent lives of the Pharaohs were beyond anyone’s imagination. Of all the precious objects unearthed in the tombs, the lavish jewels were perhaps the most fascinating for their extravagance and never-before-seen symbolism. The Roaring Twenties and the period’s Art Deco jewelry embraced the vivid contrasting colors, motifs, and symbols more daringly than ever before. Whether the jewels were complete, faithful reproductions or real artifacts preciously decorated in similar style, the Egyptian Revival jewelry during the Art Deco era is the most lavish and magnificent.
The brooch is 1 1/4 inches (32mm) wide and is 1 1/2 inches (35mm) tall.
The brooch is hallmarked 585 for 14 Karat Gold.
