About the Item

Line Vautrin created "flame-radiating" resin mirrors in mid-century that are very similar to this sculptural resin edelweiss-flower set of highly-textural, hand-carved and enameled convex brooch with matching clip earrings, which have distinct French decorative brass hardware authenticated by the French artist's daughter Marie-Laure Bonnaud-Vautrin for other auctioned unsigned earrings. After creating decorative objects and jewelry in primarily gilded bronze, Vautrin worked in cellulose acetate or her patented Talosel (word derived from ace-TA-te cellu-LOSE e-L-abore)--often reinterpreting edelweiss or sunflowers. Her daughter was quoted by a published expert on Vautrin's work Ginger Moro: "They (Vautrin's students) could sign their own names, but not hers. Line signed her bronzes, but rarely signed the Talosel, L.V." So it is not unusual that this cellulose-acetate set is unsigned. Most jewelry by Vautrin was inspired by antique symbols, mythical figures, and poetry. In the folklore of multiple European countries, the edelweiss was known as a beautiful flower that could only be found in the wild in mountainous areas, so to seek them was considered a spiritual journey. Found in harsh conditions, edelweiss became a symbol of nationalistic devotion despite adversity, such as around WWII when traditional jewelry materials were scarce and celluloid acetate became a popular plastic alternative. Reflecting the pale alpine flower, each piece of ecru resin is uniquely carved into organic wisps to resemble the edelweiss tiered star-shaped petals. The prominent center is painted with gray-blue enamel to represent the spikelet florets-pods, topped with yellow-ochre and black enamel dots to suggest pollen and the distinct fuzzy hairs of the flower. This design and decoration reflects the often pointy or round appendages and muted colors found on Vautrin's iconic mirrors and larger pieces of jewelry. Further mimicking the decorative fluted texture seen on some of her mirrors, such as a tinted black one shown in our closeup whose title translates as "Madness", the patinated brass bases of the French clip earrings are engraved like a radiating celestial body. This demonstrates the detailed metalworking skills for which Vautrin is also known, which suit the Vogue-magazine nickname for her as the "poetess of metal". Given the combination of handmarks, materials, color and subject matter that suggest their artistic origin in France mid-century when Vautrin sold such items from her Parisian boutique and through other French shops, we encourage the collector to seek attribution from the French estate experts of Line Vautrin (1913-1997) which involves her daughter. This upfront cost for foreign attribution services is not included with our listing. For direction, see the online listing of American auction-house Wright about its 2014 sale of an authenticated 1950s pair of enameled resin button earrings, which shares materials and dimensions of this edelweiss pair along with the brass clip design. Jewelry for men and women depicting edelweiss has a long history as the flower favored by European emperors and kings, so can be found skillfully carved in a variety of organic materials dating back centuries, such as in bone. Vautrin also carved some of her works from ivory. The earrings are each 3cm in diameter, while the dimensions of the brooch are noted in the Measurement Units section. All are in good condition.

Schreiner NY 1950s 22 ProngSet Crystals AB & PiecrustSetPaleYellow Clip Earrings
By Henry Schreiner
Located in Chicago, IL
In 1956 when Christian Dior's ultra-feminine New Look had dominated fashion for nearly a decade, Schreiner New York handcrafted these opulent unsigned earrings with 22 prong-set open-back crystals to accompany the eveningwear of an American high-end fashion designer. They may have been for client Pauline Trigere when her ready-to-wear collections with accessories including unmarked-Schreiner jewelry were sold by NYC's Bergdorf Goodman and worn by her clients including Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Elizabeth Taylor. Comparatively, Schreiner jewelry produced in the 1950s for direct sale to high-end department stores, such as Neiman Marcus, Henri Bendel and Saks Fifth Avenue, were the only pieces to include a brand signature. Using the best quality European crystals that were custom-made for him, the founder Henry Schreiner was among the world's leading glass-jewelry designers before he died in 1954, whereafter his daughter and her husband continued with their handcrafted production. The family shared this distinction with Western Germany-based Max Muller and Paris-based Roger Jean Pierre, who were commissioned to create haute-couture pieces for the world's leading fashion houses. Notably in 1949, Henry Schreiner was commissioned by Dior to create several exclusive pieces. We know these earrings were not created earlier than 1956 because of the use of iridescent coating on some of the crystals that produces a rainbow effect. Known as aurora-borealis (AB) stones, Swarovski initially produced them exclusively for a haute-couture collection that year by Dior. Shortly thereafter, the Schreiner team had access to such colorful stones, and most certainly used them as soon as possible to enable their American fashion-designer clients to compete with the new Dior iridescent-colors trend. At the bottom tips of the marquise-shaped pale yellow stones...

MiriamHaskell WWII FrankHess Layered Rhodoid & Crystal Montee Climber Earrings
By Frank Hess for Miriam Haskell
Located in Chicago, IL
Beginning in 1939, American Miriam Haskell asked her first designer since 1926 Frank Hess to sparingly use metal in their costume-jewelry collections during WWII while war materials were needed. So not unlike the Spring/Summer 2024 floral appliques designed by Balmain artistic director Olivier Rousteing, hand-crafted rose-motif plastic never looked more beautiful in the 20th Century than such eye-catching glossy creations as these ballet-pink clip earrings by Hess. In this reflective and sparkling pair of lightweight slightly asymmetrical climbers, shiny film-like rhodoid is hand-cut, layered in three dimensions for irregular shadows, and riveted with clear roses-montees to a thin silver metal frame, which replaced Hess' characteristic wired Russian-gilt brass frame while still resembling his earlier construction (see our other Haskell listing for an early double fur-clip chain lariat). The earring clips, with tiny holes that were used for unsigned Haskell...
