Antique 18th Century Diamond Princess Pendeloque Drop Earrings Gold Portuguese

About the Item

Museum-quality 18th century rose-cut diamond ‘princess style’ pendeloque pendant earrings in rose gold, Portugal. Of elongated and slightly exaggerated outline typical of the period, this design complimented the high hairstyles of the 18th century and would be the perfect jewel for a special event today. Each pierced openwork drop earring is composed by three articulated sections decorated with carved foliate motifs and rose-cut diamonds in closed-back settings, with an oval surmount leading to a ribbon-tied bow middle section which, in turn, suspends a pear-shape drop. Secured to reverse with their original lever-back fitting. These earrings are in excellent condition, displaying a stunning patina to the gold. One of the most desirable 18th century earring designs for night wear was the bow-drop earrings called the pendeloque. It was characterized by a top (either round, oval or marquise-shaped) connected to a figural bow supporting a drop usually of a similar design to the top. Its outline was often elongated and slightly exaggerated, probably to offset the extremely high hairstyles of the 1770s. TECHNICAL DATA • Unmarked. • Dimensions: 6.0 x 2.0 cm. • Gross weight: 22.79g.
