A Pair of Natural Pearl, Mother-of-Pearl, Sapphire and Diamond Earrings "Penelope" by the Jewelry Designer, Sarah Ho. These earrings, inlaid with shimmering mother of pearl, outlined in diamonds and sapphires with a large natural pearl stud and a drop of natural pearls. The diamonds total 11.1ct with 1.45ct of blue sapphire. Natural pearls are incredibly rare, only 1 in 10,000 (non-farmed) oysters will ever produce a pearl, and only a small fraction of those will be of gem quality. Before the creation of the cultured pearl by Mikimoto in 1893, pearl divers would search the depths of the Arabian Gulf to seek out these jewels of the sea. The island of Bahrain was the centre of trade for these gems, and it remains today the capital for Natural pearls. These natural pearls are from Mexico, an area known for it's lustrous black natural pearls. These earrings are for pierced ears but can be altered for non-pierced ears. Sarah went on to study gemmology in Antwerp, preparing her to launch her fine jewelry company in 2006. The gemstones and diamonds take precedence in each of Sarah’s designs; whether it be an array of faceted and cabochon stones with diamond capped beads, Paraiba tourmalines graduating from sea green to sky blue or the ring with the rare natural rainbow pearl amidst the rose cut diamonds. Sarah hand-paints each design concept, dreaming-up alluring color combinations and striking silhouettes. Romantic and contemporary arrangements of pearls, diamonds and gems are crafted in to vibrant motifs with her signature enamel patterns, lacework and precious beads; culminating in to a unique and remarkable jewel. Often led by the stone for the design, Sarah takes care to source her gems responsibly and ethically - whether it’s charitable initiatives or reimagining an old piece.
