About the Item

A Museum Quality silver-gilt belt buckle with enamel decoration, and teardrop shaped coral and dating to circa 1830, from Saframpolis (Safranbolu) in the Pontos of Greece, present day Turkey. There is a similar buckle in the collection of the Benaki Museum in Athens, dated 1837. We have included a photo of this buckle below. Saframpolis jewelry is unique in the use of carved, ridged, teardrop-shaped corals, which are not seen elsewhere. The buckle is from the Safranbolu (Saframpolis, to its former Greek inhabitants), in the Black Sea region of present day Turkey. As its name illustrates, Safranbolu was a trading center for saffron. This contributed to the wealth of many of its inhabitants, creating a market for sophistated, luxe jewelry like this buckle. The stunning and rare antique Silver Coral Enamel Monumental Buckle is of extraordinary quality. The buckle in Silver is adorned with a myriad of carved natural coral of great beauty. In the centers are medallions decorated with a central round coral surrounded by turquoise blue enamel. Around the border of the two large medallions are scarab shaped motifs with dark blue enamel beaded elements. The enamel medallions at the edges are centered with mirrored elements. The silver on the front of the buckle has a gold wash. The buckle is a monumental 15 inches wide and 5 inches tall. The buckle is in very fine condition. There is some very minimal loss of enamel consistent with the age of the piece. We are so thrilled to be able to offer this magnificent Museum quality piece. The buckle is 15 inches (38cm) wide and 5 inches tall.
