About the Item

This is one of the finest Belle Epoque - Victorian Bohemian Locket Pendants we have seen. The early French locket pendant is adorned with a magnificent Garnet Cabochon with Emeralds, Rubies, Pearls and black and white Enamel. The jewels are set in Sterling Silver with the French hallmark. The central oval garnet cabochon is surrounded by a halo of pearls with a black and white enamel border. Fabulous square cut natural mined Emeralds frame the bottom and top of the cabochon. Pendant fringe drops at the bottom of the locket contain oval faceted garnets. The fabulous articulated fringe drops are adorned with further black and white enameling. There are Greek key motif designs at the side of the locket adorned with rubies as is the articulated crescent from which the fringe drops hang. At the top is a bow motif set throughout with rubies and a pearl set center. A white enamel border links the bow to the key motifs. The reverse has a locket compartment with glass cover with a hinge to open so you may place your favorite photo or memento. The extraordinary locket has French silver hallmarks and dates to the Belle Epoque period. We have a matching bracelet in another listing. The museum quality jewel is worthy of the fine jewelry collections in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and London's Victoria and Albert Museum. The French jewelry makers during the 19th Century were unparalleled. The rare large garnet, with the emeralds and rubies with enamel accent in a bow motif locket creates an absolute dream. The combination of the blood red garnets with the red rubies and emeralds is very Napoleonic, very French, and creates a passionate magnificent jewel. We have included a photo of the matching bracelet which is in another listing and not included in the purchase but we wanted you to see both pieces. The locket dates to the Napoleon III - Belle Epoque periods, circa 1840-1890. The locket pendant is 2 7/8 inches (7 cm) long. The locket is 1 3/8 inches (35mm) wide. The locket opening on the reverse is 20mm by 16mm by 4mm deep. The bale is hallmarked with the French guarantee mark for silver.
