About the Item

This sterling silver pendant holds an authentic Greek coin dating back to 90 BC, featuring a depiction of Pegasus, the legendary winged horse. On the reverse side of the coin, you can see Mutinus Titius, an ancient Roman deity associated with marriage and fertility, resembling the deity Priapus. The Temple of Mutinus Titius was located on the Velia hill and is believed to have existed from the founding of Rome until the 1st century BC. Pegasus, known as Πήγασος (Pḗgasos) in Greek and Latin, is a mythical divine horse with wings and is one of the most renowned creatures in Greek mythology. Typically depicted as pure white, Pegasus is the offspring of the Olympian god Poseidon and was born from the Gorgon Medusa. The Greek hero Bellerophon successfully captured Pegasus near the Peirene fountain with the assistance of Athena and Poseidon. Bellerophon rode Pegasus to defeat the monstrous Chimera, leading to various other heroic exploits. However, Bellerophon eventually fell from Pegasus' back while attempting to reach Mount Olympus. In honor of Pegasus, Zeus transformed the horse into the constellation that bears its name. According to early Christian testimonies, it is believed that during ancient Roman marriage rites, brides rode on the phallus of Mutinus Titinus to prepare for the act of intimacy. Arnobius suggests that Roman matrons were somewhat compelled to mount the "horrible phallus" of Titinus, although other sources indicate that this ritual taught brides not to feel embarrassed about sexual matters. Festus, a grammarian from the 2nd century AD, is the only classical Latin source that mentions this deity.

An interesting, authentic, silver denarius coin from the period of the Roman Republic in 79 BCE, featuring a griffin leaping, is set in a Steven Battelle ancient inspired handmade matte-finish textured bezel mount with 1.8mm VS1 diamond accent. The denarius was approximately the daily wage of a soldier in ancient Rome. This particular type of coin is known as a denarius serratus. The ragged edges of the coin are intentional (all coins of this type have them) to show that coin is pure silver. The minting of the coins was an annual office shared by 3 men, and they often placed the family name on the coins. This coin was minted by moneyer L. Papius, who was probably from Lanuvium, which was about 19 miles outside of Rome. The reverse side of the coin displays...
