About the Item

This one-of-a-kind ring by Eytan Brandes features five natural sapphire and ruby cabochons, each with interesting color and light characteristics. The magenta-colored stone is a 2.94 carat star ruby from Madagascar. In the right light, it shows a distinct six-pointed star, but in every other light, it still has a beautiful luster and sheen. The large oval stone is a 3.33 carat blue-green "parti" sapphire with streaky green inclusions and plenty of internal crackle. On the sides are two small star sapphires. Both present six-pointed stars, but that of the gray sapphire (1.61 carats) is very strong and centered while that of the black sapphire (1.4 carats) is shy and tends to creep at the corners. The fifth stone is a 2.92 carat silver-grey sapphire with unusual golden needle inclusions. It's also a star sapphire, and when the star blazes through all that interior "crackle," the stone appears slightly more gold than gray. You'll find yourself endless shifting your hand around to find all the different effects these five stones have in their bags of tricks. The ring is a freeform delivery system in hammered 14 karat yellow gold -- unapologetically substantial but comfortable to wear. Currently a size 8.5, according to the mandrel, but it fits a little larger since there's plenty of wiggle room behind the ring's large front face. Resizing is complimentary for full-price buyers and negotiable otherwise, but please let us know your sizing needs up front so we can make sure you can be accommodated. The total stone weight is 12.2 carats and the total ring weight is 18.5 grams. The face of the ring is 29mm (about 1-1/8") tall. The band is 3.5mm wide and 2mm thick.

Freeform "Lava Pool" Ring with 1.16 Carats Yellow Spectrum Diamonds in 18K Gold
By Eytan Brandes
Located in Sherman Oaks, CA
Many of our customers bring us their old jewelry to be melted down so that we can apply the scrap gold credit to the price of their new custom pieces by Eytan Brandes. During this process, Eytan plucks out the precious stones and sorts them according to a system nobody but he understands. This ring was fashioned by Eytan specifically to use up his pile of extracted yellow diamonds, all taken from various pre-owned pieces over a period of around 25 years. They're in various shades ranging from pale yellow to fancy yellow to golden yellow-brown. (And there's two small champagne-colored diamonds thrown in the mix, just to keep everyone on their toes.) This is a mish-mash of round stones -- all different sizes, colors and clarities. Most are full (i.e., brilliant) cut, but a few are mixed cuts. They're pavé-set on an oxidized (black) landscape over the slightly concave front of a naturalistic and freeform 18 karat yellow gold ring. Eytan calls it his Lava Pool ring...

"Marquee" Ring with Raw Ruby Cabochon Between Rows of Faceted Rubies in 18K Gold
By Eytan Brandes
Located in Sherman Oaks, CA
This delicious ring by Eytan Brandes was actually completed back in 2019, but it was originally set with an opaque green stone. We liked the way it looked, but the stone was problematic since we weren't sure if it was green agate, jadeite or nephrite and once it was set, we couldn't test it (oops). After a lot of backy forthy, Eytan decided it was too weird to be listing a ring with an unidentified "green stone," so he popped it out* and decided it would be fun to contrast the top quality, sparkling pink rubies with their cousin from the wrong side of the tracks: a rough ruby. This kind of ruby is completely natural and completely loaded with every flaw under the sun: silk, uneven color, spider veins, milky streaks, fissures, fractures, you name it. We love rough rubies (and rough sapphires too). Yes, they can be hard to cut (our gemcutter does NOT love them) because you have to find enough material that isn't threatened by internal fractures, but once they're successfully cut into cabochons, they polish up beautifully and, like all rubies, they are reliably durable. Even though they're effectively opaque (because they're so chock full o'flaws), they have a lustrous depth and character that you just won't find with either naturally opaque OR transparent stones. So, having said all that, we reintroduce the Marquee Ring...

Star Sapphires and Multi Colored Sapphires Diamond Yellow Gold Cocktail Ring
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Star Sapphires and Multi-Colored Sapphire Ruby diamond yellow gold cocktail ring, circa 1990s. The "Star Sapphires and Multi-Colored Sapphire Ruby Diamond Yellow Gold Cocktail Ring, Circa 1990s," represents a unique intersection of artistry, craftsmanship, and the cultural significance of gemstone jewelry during this era. This cocktail ring is not merely an accessory; it encapsulates the aesthetic values and socio-economic conditions of the 1990s, characterized by a revival in bold fashion statements. The use of star sapphires—gemstones that exhibit asterism—highlights both natural beauty and rarity, making them particularly desirable among collectors and aficionados alike. The phenomenon occurs when light reflects off needle-like inclusions within the stone, creating a star-like pattern that captivates viewers. Moreover, the inclusion of multi-colored sapphires alongside rubies and diamonds enhances the ring's visual appeal while symbolizing diversity in design. Each gemstone carries its own significance; for instance, sapphires are often associated with wisdom and nobility, while rubies symbolize passion and vitality. The combination reflects a broader trend in jewelry design during the 1990s that favored eclecticism over minimalism. This cocktail ring serves as an embodiment of personal expression through adornment—a notion that gained traction as individualism became increasingly valued in contemporary culture. Additionally, the choice of yellow gold as a setting for these vibrant stones further emphasizes warmth and richness in color contrast. Yellow gold has historically been associated with luxury and permanence, thus enhancing the overall prestige of such pieces. In conclusion, this cocktail ring is more than just an ornamental piece; it is a cultural artifact that encapsulates significant artistic trends while reflecting societal values at the turn of the decade. Its intricate design invites ongoing appreciation from both historical perspectives and modern sensibilities concerning gemstone jewelry.
