This delicious ring by Eytan Brandes was actually completed back in 2019, but it was originally set with an opaque green stone. We liked the way it looked, but the stone was problematic since we weren't sure if it was green agate, jadeite or nephrite and once it was set, we couldn't test it (oops). After a lot of backy forthy, Eytan decided it was too weird to be listing a ring with an unidentified "green stone," so he popped it out* and decided it would be fun to contrast the top quality, sparkling pink rubies with their cousin from the wrong side of the tracks: a rough ruby. This kind of ruby is completely natural and completely loaded with every flaw under the sun: silk, uneven color, spider veins, milky streaks, fissures, fractures, you name it. We love rough rubies (and rough sapphires too). Yes, they can be hard to cut (our gemcutter does NOT love them) because you have to find enough material that isn't threatened by internal fractures, but once they're successfully cut into cabochons, they polish up beautifully and, like all rubies, they are reliably durable. Even though they're effectively opaque (because they're so chock full o'flaws), they have a lustrous depth and character that you just won't find with either naturally opaque OR transparent stones. Four different components came together to make this sexy 14 karat yellow gold chain. The curb chain itself is standard jeweler's inventory that's been kicking around the store for a few years. Eytan Brandes removed the lobster clasp and added the toggle, which is newly cast from an antique silver toggle. For the end ring, he pried one of the rings off of a boring brooch -- one of those pins where a cluster of rings makes a kind of wreath. The ring looks great -- it's thick and has squared edges -- but it's hollow and too lightweight to stand up to the solid toggle. (Strangulation alert!) Rather than lose the ring, Eytan decided to add some weight. The tassel -- from his mysterious pile of 1950's gold tassels acquired several years ago -- is his happy solution. It moves freely from a large matching bale and is the perfect finishing touch! What to do with a little 14 karat frog that's been hopping around the store for so long no one remembers where he came from? Answer? Attach him to the kind of gemstone a frog would love: a big drop-shaped faceted cabochon of moss agate. This is a type of quartz with a white or clear body color, but shot through with fern-link green inclusions (mostly manganese and something called hornblende, the description of which is so geoscience-y that we just don't want to go there). The chubby little frog has diamond eyes (about 0.01 carats each) and that sweetly contented expression that makes frogs so lovable, despite the fact they live in swamps and don't really seem to be all that sociable toward humans. We can dream, can't we? The stone is wrapped in a 14 karat gold frame made from a hand-sculpted wax mold by Eytan Brandes.
