About the Item

This is a rare and wonderful antique Belle Epoque, Victorian ring with a beautiful hand carved Intaglio of a Roman Warrior God with a winged helmet, Mercury or Hermes, in Bloodstone. The early ring is 10 Karat Gold. The blood stone is hand carved with the image of a Roman Warrior God - Hermes or Mercury. Carving hard stone gems, such as bloodstones, is very difficult and requires a superb artisan. The carving on the stone is just stunning. The bloodstone has fabulous specks of red, or "blood" which are created in most instances by flecks of the red stone, Jasper. Bloodstone itself is a variety of quartz. The famed contemporary jeweler, Elizabeth Locke, uses antique intaglios as the inspiration for her works. Her pieces usually use glass intaglios. Here is your opportunity to own the real thing with a rare hand carved bloodstone intaglio! The dramatic Hermes or Mercury ring creates a conversation piece to be passed on for generations. And Intaglio carved jewels are all the rage today. The ring dates to circa 1850 - 1900. Hermes (Greek Mythology), Mercury (Roman Mythology) In Greek mythology, Hermes was the messenger of the gods, the protector of travelers, and the guide of the dead to the underworld. Messenger of the gods: Hermes was the messenger of the gods and a mediator between the living and the dead. He was often depicted with a winged hat and sandals. Protector of travelers: Hermes was the patron god of travelers, and his statues were often found at crossroads. Other associations: Hermes was also associated with luck, shepherds, athletes, and merchants. He was the patron of invention, art, literature, and trade. The bloodstone is 10mm by 8mm. The ring is currently a size 6 US and can be easily resized if desired. The ring is 10 Karat Gold The ring weighs 2.1 grams.

Indulge in a superb museum quality Victorian - Belle Epoque deeply carved hardstone Cameo Ring depicting an image of the god Hermes or Mercury in a spectacular high relief carved agate and set in a beautiful and elegant Etruscan Revival setting in 10 Karat Gold. The ring dates to circa 1850-1880. The agate is a stunningly beautiful color. The ring features the most beautifully carved high relief cameo of the Greek God Hermes, known as Mercury to the Romans, with his fabulous face with his winged helmet. His face is an exquisite rendition in the hardstone of the handsome god with his curly hair, elegant face, winged helmet, and wonderful neck and shoulders. I love the way the artist has created his nude form in the cameo. The carving is very deep 3-dimensional design attesting to the extremely fine quality of the work. The setting is beautiful with the repousse adornment of the band in the Etruscan Revival style. Antique hand carved cameo...

Antique Imperial Russian Minerva Ring Intaglio Red Onyx 56/14K Gold ØUS 5.75
Located in SE
Antique Russian Unisex Signet Intaglio Ring dating to ca. ca. late XIX - early XX cent. in solid 14K Rose / Red Gold with claw set fine intaglio on Red Onyx depicting Greek Athena (Roman Minerva ) or Anat (Canaanite ) or Neith (Egyptian) - Goddess of poetry, medicine, wisdom, commerce, weaving, and the crafts. Hand - carved with great accuracy and attention to detail on solid stone of irregular cut ca. 16 mm x 11 mm x 3 mm deep / ca 13 ct. This ring is unisex and is suitable for Men and Women if the size is right. Made in Imperial Russia ca. late XIX - early XX cent. Hallmarks partially Hallmarked with Imperial Russian 56 (14K) fragmented hallmarks used before 1908, parts of other original hallmarks were removed / damaged in the process of past resizing. Apparently tin was used to solder the band, it became darkened / patinated with time on both sides. Used fine condition, cameo is secure in trident shaped claws. Stone with very minor signs of wear. Decades old patina on metal that I didn't dare to polish off. Size : Ø 9 US scale / 18.89 mm.Resizing is possible . Weight: 4.1 grams. P.S Fragmented hallmarks on old Russian rings made at Imperial period is a common feature because of the way these rings used to be hallmarked. Very often Russian Jewelers would hallmark the narrowest part of ring's band, both outside and inside and as a result such hallmarks would often become naturally damaged as a result of natural wear ( if placed outside ) or as a result of custom (careless) resizing that could often be necessary if the ring changed the owner, say after 30 - 40 years of its appearance when such hallmarks were still relatively common and seemed not so old to care about so much .. Jewelers would often cut the narrowest part of the band to make it smaller or bigger... Thus a lot of Russian rings have fragmented or lost hallmarks and that makes proper ID difficult or impossible. Swedish Jewelers would always hallmark the internal side of the band closer to the crown and such areas were normally not touched in the process sizing and thus most of Swedish rings...
