About the Item

The gold ring can be dated to around the Nineteenth century and in the centre there is a vitreous intaglio depicting an erotic scene. This genre was taken up in the 1800s on a Roman model, since in ancient Rome there are countless erotic depictions, including the famous decorations of Pompeii and Herculaneum, reclaimed and then hidden for centuries. These depictions so widespread, however, had an extremely different connotation from that of today, in fact, they constituted a hymn to the prosperity and celebration of worldly and carnal pleasures until, with the advent of Christianity, they were not considered filthy and, therefore, prohibited.
