About the Item

Georgian 18K Gold Mourning Ring Depicting a Cupid Flying above an Eternal Flame, Dated 1771 A poignant and exquisitely crafted mourning ring from the Georgian period, this rare 18 karat gold piece dates to circa 1771 and features an evocative enamel scene of a winged Cupid in flight above an eternal flame—symbolizing eternal love and the soul’s ascension. The ring bears a personalized memorial inscription in black enamel on the band: “ROBT ANDERSON * DIED 12 OCT 1771 AGED 50." Such detailed and specific inscriptions are prized by collectors for their emotional depth and historical context. The face of the ring measures approximately 0.6 x 0.5 inches and is presented in excellent antique condition, retaining remarkable clarity in its enamel work and detail. The ring is currently a size 7 and, due to the nature of its construction and enamel, cannot be resized. Materials: Solid 18 karat gold (tested via XRF and jeweler’s acids); enamel. Era: Georgian, dated 1771. Condition: Excellent antique condition with only minimal wear appropriate to age. This ring is a compelling relic of 18th-century mourning culture—an intimate, wearable artifact imbued with history and sentiment. A museum-worthy addition to any curated collection of antique jewels.
